Renowned american travel magazine Travel and Leisure (T+L) named Croatia its 'world destination of the year' based on an online poll, it was announced Monday.
In an online poll that ran for the past month, Croatia recevied 28 percent of the vote, leaving Portugal in second place with 24 percent of the vote, and Pittsburgh in third with 24 percent.
Also nominated for the title of top destination for 2016 were Hawaii, Paris, New Zealand, Iceland and Rio de Janeiro, while last year's title went to Cuba.
In describing Croatia, the magazine writes that it is 'a jewel in the crown of the Adriatic' and one of the most intriguing places to visit this year. They also throw light on the sights of Split and Dubrovnik, whose pictures graced the magazine's web pages through out the vote.
Croatia's win, they explain, can also be attributed to the fact that parts of the series Game of Thrones were shot in Dubrovnik, but are also careful to note that Croatia is more than just a film set and that it has so much more to offer.
They praise Croatia's urban centers and the rich history of its capital city, Zagreb, as well as Šibenik, Hvar, Mljet, Korčula and other islands, including national parks - all of which they highly recommend as places to visit.
The magazine Travel and Leisure distinguishes Istria for its excellent offer of agritourism and wineries, the Dalmatian coast and the overall offer of great food, specifically cheeses and olive oils.
