The decision to adopt 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development comes at a particularly important moment as the international community embraces the new Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In a personal greeting address, the UNWTO Secretary General, Taleb Rifai, commends this unique opportunity for the promotion of the contribution of tourism in achieving the future we want. He expresses deep content and pride that tourism has been globally recognized as a pillar of sustainable development, highlighting the fact that the UN General Assembly’s decision to dedicate 2017 to tourism’s contribution to sustainable and inclusive growth was no coincidence.

The decision to adopt 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development comes at a particularly important moment as the international community embraces the new Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Tourism is included as targets under three of the SDGs – promotion of sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all; sustainable consumption and production; and conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
