Voluntourism: Networking Workshop Held for Representatives of the Public, Private and Non-Profit Sectors
The first networking workshop of stakeholders in the 'Open up a border for adventure and new travel opportunities' EU project was held in Dubrovnik, on September 30th.
Representatives from travel agencies, public institutions with jurisdiction in the tourism and business sectors, as well as members from non-profit organisations, all took part in a day long workshop where they were introduced to the project and the very concept of voluntourism as a new form of cross-border tourism product. They were also presented the results of research efforts which covered the coastal areas of Montenegro, Cetinje and the Dubrovnik county area.
The guest lecturer, Irena Ateljević, covered the topic 'Transformative tourism and the shift of the world paradigm toward concious consumerism'. Volunteer and community development experts, Lejla Šehić and Jelena Kamenko, spoke about 'Voluntourism - the social contact of tourists and the participation in socially responsibile programs of the local community'.
The next networking workshop will be held in Herceg Novi, Montenegro toward the end of October, when a greater emphasis will be put on developing products and the need for advancing cross-sector cooperation in creating new offers in the region.
The 'Open up a border for adventure and new travel opportunities' project is being implemented under the EU program on cross-border IPA component II, the Program on Cross-Border Cooperation Croatia – Montenegro 2012-2013. The project foresees a number of different promotional voluntourism activities, linking stakehlders from different sectors and stregthening their capacities for developing new programs which are based on social entrepreneurship.
